5 things...to ponder

Matt and I are in "discussions" over his viola. He has been playing for four years and he wants to call it quits...or so he says. Which leads me to wonder...

1. I wonder if I'm hesitating because I'm the mom and he should do as I say?

2. Or is it because I think he can ride out the teasing from his friends?
(He's one of four boys in the entire seventh and eighth grade orchestra.)
3. Am I trying to teach a lesson about sticking with something?
(If that's the case, is four years enough?)

4. Or is it, that I will not let sports overtake everything?

5. Maybe he does indeed really "hate" it as he says and I should just listen.

Not sure if this will help or not - but I wanted to stop playing volleyball and piano when I was a kid. My father let me stop both. To this day I regret that I didn't stick it out. I say try to stick it out and if he really does hate hate it - then let him stop. But, don't have him regret it just because for a short time he was unhappy.

Oh, this is a tough decision. I won't even try to guess what's best, but I will wish you luck.

Very good questions. Wish I had some equally good answers ;) Good luck.

How tricky, when motherhood throws these sorts of problems at us I always feel there should be a manual. In January I allowed my 10 year old to give up his guitar for a while. He wasn't enjoying the lessons at his new school and getting him to practise was becoming miserable for both of us but I still really want him to go further with it and I did get him to agree to having a couple of terms off and then giving it another go, maybe with a different teacher. Incidentally, none of his friends played either and I think that doesn't help much.

Snow!! Wishing you sunshine and warmth.

Hard decisions.
Our son gave up his guitar lessons - we were sad but, it clearly was not his passion. Even the teacher who loved him as a student admitted it was probably time to move on...

There is a merit in pushing through the challenges... and giving up something because no one else is doing it... gosh I don't know.

Thinking of you. Sorry 'bout the blip in the weather.

Tough one.
Julian has played:recorder, violin and wanted to play guitar. Soccer is now his world- no music except the mp3 player. I wish he played music, but he plays ball and is happy. Sophia plays piano but no sports...go figure.

We go through this every year, too. I use the whole "value of music, and learning it and performing it" argument... Not sure how much longer they are going to buy it, though. It's tough as they get older - there is so much already on their plates!

Is it wrong that i LOVE the photo of your snow covered tulips? Great questions there. does he still practice or does he "hate" it so much that he only plays in class? My boys have been in taekwondo for for almost three years and they love it but many days they don't want to go and would rather stay home and read or play - all the driving and practicing after school is hard on the kids.

I hope you reach the right decision, I am sure I will have the same dilemas with my son one day!

well, hello there...

I thought I might start writing again.  Not sure what I will want to talk about.  The guys have their own lives and are making...
